Indo-Pak Express receives Peace and Sport award

The doubles tennis team formed by Indian Rohan Bopanna and Pakistani Ul-Haq Aisam Qureshi, called “Indo-Pak Express” by the fans, has won this year’s Peace and Sport Image of the Year Award.

For the third year, the award presented by the Peace and Sport organisation in partnership with SPORTELMonaco and Getty Images rewarded the image that best showed the ability of sport to advance peace in the world.

Hindu Roham and Muslim Aisam have been played together for three years and actively campaign for peace between the two nations through their partnership, displaying the slogan “Stop War, Start Tennis” on their gear.

“Sport’s greatest victory is not measured in terms of medals. It is measured by its ability to positively change people’s lives and bring them hope,” said Peace and Sport president and founder Joel Bouzou. “And that’s exactly what Rohan and Aisam succeed in doing.”

This year the award winner was chosen by a public vote on the internet. The winning photograph, capturing the moment the United Nations ambassadors for India and Pakistan met up with the pair when they reached this year’s US Open final, won nearly 60 per cent of the votes.

The announcement was made last night during the 21st Georges Bertellotti Golden Podium Awards Monaco 2010.
