La Liga Clubs reject Barca and Real offer of greater TV revenue

Spain’s two biggest football clubs, Barcelona and Real Madrid, have had their Tuesday offer to share future television revenues with the other La Liga clubs rejected.

Madrid and Barca proposed that they should receive 34 per cent of the total TV revenue from the 2014-15 season onwards, with Atletico Madrid and Valencia both earning 11 per cent and 55 per cent split among the rest. Villarreal yesterday led a large group of clubs who are unhappy with the proposed share and launched a counter proposal that will be discussed on October 22, when all the clubs hope to reach a final settlement.

“We have asked for justice in regards to the distribution of television revenues, not charity, and in this meeting Real Madrid and Barcelona have shown solidarity with teams that are relegated to the second division,” said Osasuna club president Patxi Izco. “While Barcelona and Real Madrid’s proposal is not ideal it is an important step from what we have today.”

Spanish clubs currently sell their TV rights individually and the two top clubs currently account for around 50 per cent of the total rights income of the top division.
