Gumede becomes first black South African rugby club owner

Johannesburg-based entrepreneur, IT mogul and Guma Group Executive Chairman Robert Gumede yesterday became the first black owner in South Africa club rugby ownership.

Following a closed competitive bidding process, the Johannesburg-based Golden Lions announced the signing of an agreement with Gumede and international businessman and philanthropist, TransAfrica Capital chairman Ivor Ichikowitz.

The partnership, in which Gumede holds 51 per cent and Ichikowitz holds 49 per cent, will purchase a 49.9 stake in the Lions Rugby. The investment is backed by undertakings to aggressively develop the Lions franchise over the next few years.

“We are investing for performance,” said Gumede, “our aim is to drive this team in every respect, so that we develop the franchise at all levels, from the junior ranks all the way to the Super Rugby team. We want the Lions leading the pack, taking it to its next level, and contributing Springboks to this country.”

Gumede, who has previously invested in football and golf in the country, says he was inspired to invest in Lions Rugby by the Super 14 semi and final matches played at Orlando Stadium in Soweto earlier this year.
