Texas Rangers sign billion-dollar Fox TV deal

Major League Baseball (MLB) team Texas Rangers, which was sold at auction last month having filed for bankruptcy, has signed a 20-year extension of its TV deal with pay-channel Fox Sports Southwest.

According to newspaper USA Today, the deal could be worth $3 billion, making it the highest TV package for a team that does not own a channel.

However, the Dallas Morning News daily reports that the agreement would be around $1.5 billion, but could also include some up-front payments to drive it higher.

“The Texas Rangers have been a valued, longtime partner for Fox, and we’re pleased that we will continue that relationship with the new ownership group,” said Fox spokesman Chris Bellitti.

The deal is understood to have been agreed just after the Rangers were sold to a group led by sports attorney Chuck Greenberg and team president Nolan Ryan in August. Hicks, who co-owns English Premier League club Liverpool alongside George Gillett, had decided to file for bankruptcy in May.
