Rogge: ‘Olympics TV rights talks in the US to start soon’

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) plans to begin negotiations over the sales of TV rights in the US for the 2014 Winter Games and 2016 Summer Games at the end of this year or the start of 2011.

IOC president Jacques Rogge told the Associated Press that he expects “all the major players in the United States” to bid, including current right holders NBC, plus CBS and Turner, ESPN-ABC and Fox.

“Broadcasters in the United States are funded exclusively by advertising. We now see signals and we hear from our partners in the advertising world that advertising is coming up,” he said. “So we are waiting for that to negotiate.”

Rogge also said that re-negotiating the revenue sharing agreement with the US Olympic Committee (USOC), which many officials feel is excessive, will foster the possibilities of an American bid to host the Olympic Games in the future.

During USOC’s annual assembly, which ended on Saturday, the organisation’s chief executive officer Scott Blackmun said it is unlikely the country will bid for the Games until a new revenue sharing agreement with the IOC is in place.
