Primedia sells 40% Kaizer Chiefs stake back to founder

Primedia has sold its 40 per cent stake in Kaizer Chiefs back to the South African football club’s founder, Kaizer Motaung, for an undisclosed sum.

Primedia, which owns several South African radio stations and a cinema chain, bought the 40 per cent stake in 1997 for R40 million.

“This is not like a divorce, it is more of a re-alignment for the two companies,” said Motaung. “In business some things work and some don't.

“Primedia decided to focus on the core business. But we are still doing business with one of Primendia's subsidiaries called Signet a sponsorship and commercial venture. We will continue to work together in areas where our respective business share a mutual interest.”

Kaizer Chiefs was launched by Motaung in 1970 and has a fanbase of around 14 million countrywide.
