UEFA to investigate Bayern Munich allegations

UEFA is to probe claims that its own anti-corruption investigators falsely alleged German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were suspected of match-fixing.

On Wednesday, Bayern started legal action against UEFA’s head of disciplinary services Peter Limacher and investigator Robin Boksic, who allegedly told German magazine Stern they had evidence the club threw their UEFA Cup semi final second leg against Zenit St. Petersburg in 2008.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino initially said Bayern was “over-reacting”, but an official statement released later conveyed a different tone.

“It was mentioned that, in the light of the recent press coverage, UEFA understands the reasons for the reaction of Bayern Munich,” read the statement.

However, there was no indication the club would drop its action. UEFA said it had “entire trust” in Limacher and would clarify Boksic’s role in certain cases.
