TV blackout as NFL’s Chargers fails to fill stadium

San Diego Chargers’ season home opener is to be blacked out on local television after the franchise failed to sell out a game for the first time since 2004.

According to US National Football League (NFL) rules, a game cannot be aired within a 75-mile radius of a team’s home market if all tickets have not been sold 72 hours prior to kick off.

More than 7,000 tickets are still available for Sunday’s game against Jacksonville Jaguars at Qualcomm Stadium, the first time Chargers does not have a home sellout in 48 games.

Last season 22 NFL games were blacked out, the highest number since 30 contests were not shown by local broadcasters in 2004.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers season opener against Cleveland Browns last Sunday was also blacked out and there are still more than 12,000 tickets unsold for Chargers’ next home game, against Arizona Cardinals on October 3.
