Al Ahli lands Toshiba shirt sponsorship

Dubai-based football club Al Ahli has signed a $3 million shirt and stadium sponsorship deal with Japanese electronics giant Toshiba, it was announced yesterday.

The club’s chief executive, Ahmed Khalifa Hammad, said the association between a well-known corporation such as Toshiba and a fast-developing club such as Al Ahli was important for promoting what he described as the club’s universal appeal.

“Al Ahli Club is perfectly positioned to be the true people’s club,” he said. “Now we need fans to help make that happen.”

The addition of World Cup-winning former Italian captain Fabio Cannavaro and Brazilian midfielder Pinga has already given the team a greater amount of international exposure.

The Toshiba deal came on the same day as the announcement of a two-year agreement between rival side Al Jazira Sports and Cultural Club and global financial services provider Barclays. As part of that deal, both towers at Al Jazira’s Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium will be rebranded the “Barclays Towers”.
