America’s Cup re-vamped following 2010 troubles

The 2013 America’s Cup is to go through a major overhaul following the legal battle between 2010 contenders Alinghi and BMW Oracle that shooed sponsors away and reverted the event’s growth trend.

This year's winners BMW Oracle, who earned the right to organise the next edition, now confirmed for 2013, will promote a series of changes that include an annual World Series providing teams with regular media exposure, sales and hospitality opportunities plus access to new countries and audiences.

Teams will compete with the world’s fastest boat, the AC72 catamaran, but cost-cutting measures to be adopted will ensure a more level playing field.

“We believe this new format and new boat will put the America’s Cup back at the pinnacle of our sport” said BMW Oracle chief executive officer Russell Coutts. "These changes will give equal opportunity to competitors and long-term economic stability to all teams and all commercial partners. We promised fairness and innovation and this is what we’ve delivered."

A Youth America’s Cup will be introduced from 2012, offering young sailors a development route to the main competition.
