United season ticket sales fall short of target

English Premier League club Manchester United has failed to hit its sales target of 54,000 season tickets for the current season.

According to news agency Bloomberg, United chief executive officer David Gill blamed the struggling British economy for the result, but was not taken aback.

“We’ve sold 51,800, which is pretty good in the current climate,” he said, highlighting the need to work hard to fill Old Trafford stadium’s 76,000 seats for every game.

“We’ve sold more season tickets than the capacity of most Premier League grounds. Our executive seat sales are on track as compared with last year in a different market.”

Last season United's Green and Gold supporters movement, which was backing a takeover bid that did not materialise from the Red Knights group, urged season ticket holders not to renew in an attempt to force current owners, the US Glazer family, to sell the club.
