Cash found in Pakistan cricketers’ hotel rooms

Scotland Yard detectives have found large amounts of cash in the London hotel rooms of several Pakistani cricketers touring England, according to UK newspaper The Independent.

Undercover footage released by UK Sunday paper News of the World showed agent Mazhar Majeed receiving £150,000 and giving precise indications of three “no-balls” that were later delivered by bowlers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif during the fourth Test match between England and Pakistan.

On Saturday night, Aamer, Asif and team captain Salman Butt had their mobile phones confiscated by the police, which also questioned team manager Yawar Saeed and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal.

Majeed was arrested on the same day and later released on bail to appear before the police at a later date.

Javed Miandad, director general of Pakistan Cricket Board, called for the entire national team to be replaced for the rest of the tour, but the complete squad yesterday left London to Taunton, where it plays Somerset later this week.

Both Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency and the International Cricket Council have sent investigators to the UK.
