NFL aims to add two regular-season games in 2012

The National Football League inched closer to an 18-game schedule yesterday after Commissioner Roger Goodell said there is “overwhelming support” to add two games to the schedule.

According to Bloomberg, the league is quickly putting together a proposal about the expansion to present to the players’ union.

The NFL currently plays four exhibition games and 16 regular-season games. Under the new schedule, they would play two exhibition games and 18 regular-season games. The NFL switched to 16 games from 14 in 1978.

“We’re focusing more on 2012,” Goodell said. “We want to do this the right way. We have moved this concept along and think it’s the right step to take, but we want to do this in conjunction with our partners, including the players.”

Additional games would benefit owners, players and fans by increasing revenue, the commissioner said.
