Airtel scoops sponsorship rights to Indian cricket team home fixtures

After an intense bidding war, Indian cricket board the BCCI has awarded Indian cricket team home series sponsorship rights to telecoms group Airtel for three years (2010-11 to 2012-13).

The deal - which covers tests, one-day internationals and Twenty20 matches - was revealed after a meeting of the BCCI marketing committee today.

"Airtel has won the Series Sponsorship Rights for the period of 2010-2013 with a bid amount of 3.33 crore per Test/ODI/T20 International (U$700,000)," confirmed BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.

Airtel takes over the rights from agency World Sports Group (WSG). As part of its package, it will get to advertise on prime spots at venues - including the stumps.

The BCCI set a minimum of around $500,000 per game for rights. But with competition form the likes of Idea, Aircel, Future Group, Hero Honda, Micromax and Karbonn Mobiles it was always likely that the rights would go for more than that.
