China edges India in mega-event hosting

Both economies are booming - but China certainly seems to have the edge over India when it comes to preparing mega-events. While India is struggling to get itself ready for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, 2010 Asian Games host city Guangzhou has already handed over 67 out of 70 of its practice and competitive venues to organisers - even though the event doesn't take place until November.

So worried are the Indian authorities that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has stepped in to make sure everything is ready on time. All Commonwealth Games venues were supposed to be complete by March - but with the event due to start in October there is still much work to be done. Already PM Singh has ordered an investigation into the preparation for the event.

Meanwhile, back in the fast-growing city of Guangzhou, the remaining three venues for the 16th Asian Games will be completed by the end of August. All told, 14,000 athletes, trainers and coaches from 45 countries and regions will compete in 42 sports. More than 10,000 media are anticipated to cover the Games with more than three million spectators expected to attend.
