Chinese commercial manager detained in fix probe

Shao Wenzhong, the head of the commercial arm of China's football association, has been detained by police as part of a widening investigation into match fixing, state media reported yesterday.

According to Reuters, the general manager of the China Football Industrial Development Corporation had been reported missing after disappearing six days earlier. The official Xinhua news agency said Wenzhong had been in police custody the entire time.

"As soon as he is done assisting the investigation, he will return," Wei Di, head of the football department in the sports ministry, was quoted as saying.

Twenty officials have been arrested this year, including the head of the national football association, as part of a government crackdown on corruption. In February two top-flight clubs were relegated to the second division after club officials were found guilty of matchfixing and gambling.
