New York Cosmos revived by English businessman

A group led by English real state developer and former official with Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur Paul Kemsley has acquired the name of the New York Cosmos, the flagship team in the extinct North American Soccer League in the 70s.

Cosmos said their goal is to re-establish the team as part of the Major League Soccer (MLS) and has appointed their most prominent ex-player, Pelé, as their honorary president.

MLS commissioner Don Garber has already said the league was looking at a second franchise in the New York area to create a rivalry with the Red Bulls, which play in New Jersey.

“Our plan has several phases, but if you fast-forward, it’s our aspiration to play at the highest level in this country and that’s MLS,” said Joe Fraga, the team executive director.

Other stars that played for Cosmos include Franz Beckenbauer and Carlos Alberto.
