Commonwealth Games organiser distances himself from corruption claims

Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman of the organising committee for the Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010, has attempted to draw a line between his organisation and corruption scandals that have been reported by the Indian media.

An Indian anti-corruption body reported on Friday that it had found dubious contracts and fake quality certificates for newly-built venues and sites under construction. Indian revenue authorities also launched an investigation into £828,000 paid to a UK-based firm without signing an official contract.

“There is total transparency in the organising committee,” said Kalmadi, “We are not looking at tenders. My job is to organise the Games.”

He released correspondence between him and the Indian High Commission in London to show the British firm was recommended by the agency: “This clearly indicates that the Indian High Commission had recommended M/S AM Car & Vans to the organising committee for the Queen's Baton Rally function in London.”

In a separate development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) turned down a request from the organising committee for a grant of one billion rupees ($22 million) make up for cost over-runs.
