The channel has received permission to launch from the Portuguese media regulator, the Entidade Reguladora para la Comunicaçâo Social (ERC).
The channel will be called Sport TV Américas, and will be available in standard and high definition, and on satellite and cable. It will broadcast for around 86 hours per week in its first year.
The channel will be distributed by US-based Portuguese-language broadcaster Seabra Portuguese Televisión (SPT).
The North American Portuguese-speaking audiences are concentrated in New York and Toronto.
