Rogge said the IOC is OK with the partnership as long as BP takes the necessary corrective measures to mitigate its oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, on the US shore.
“If a company would have been negligent, that’s another issue,” he told The Associated Press. “Everyone can be exposed to an accident.”
However, he admitted it would not be the IOC’s call to decide what to do in case the US congress or the government find BP guilty of being negligent in the weeks leading up to the environmental disaster.
Rogge was speaking at the unveiling of chemical manufacturer Dow as the new IOC top-level sponsor, when the message of sustainability was repeatedly emphasized.
