Open golf stays on BBC until 2016

Golf’s Open Championship will be shown on the BBC in the UK until 2016 after a new five-year deal between the public-service broadcaster and the St Andrews-based R&A, golf's governing body.

The new deal extends the BBC’s current contract as exclusive live television broadcaster, and also covers radio, online, interactive and iPlayer.

“It is very important to The R&A that The Open remains accessible to as many people as possible and the BBC is an ideal partner in fulfilling this ambition across the United Kingdom,” said R&A chief executive Peter Dawson.

This year’s event - the first to be broadcast in High Definition – will see over 40 hours of coverage broadcast over the four days on BBC One, BBC Two and the BBC HD Channel.

Media reports also suggest that the BBC will also retain coverage of the US Masters, with Sky apparently unwilling to share coverage.
