Rogge: time for South Africa to decide about 2020

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said yesterday it was time for South Africa to decide whether it was ready to host the Summer Olympics after successfully staging this year's FIFA World Cup.

"From the start, when South Africa was named as World Cup hosts, we all knew the country would be able to organise the tournament," Rogge said, before adding South Africa has also successfully staged the All Africa Games in 1999, the 1995 Rugby World Cup and a string of major cricket tournaments.

He added: "Now it is up to you as a nation to decide if you want to host this event."

Rogge was among the crowd at Soccer City in Johannesburg on Sunday to see Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 in extra-time to become world champions.

South Africa's Deputy Sport Minister Gert Oosthuizen said his government has already shown interest in bidding for a future Olympics and would be in discussions with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee about bidding for 2020 or 2024.

Like the World Cup, South Africa failed in its first bid to host the Olympics when Cape Town finished third behind Athens and Rome for the 2004 Games.
