Texas Rangers sued over “sale breach”

The Texas Rangers are being sued by a bidding consortium led by Nolan Ryan and Chuck Greenberg over an accusation the Major League Baseball club breached a sale agreement.

The group wants the US Bankruptcy Court in Fort Worth, Texas, to order the Rangers to sell up in compliance with its purchase agreement.

After filing for bankruptcy in May, the Rangers sought court permission to sell the club to a group led by Greenberg and Ryan, in a transaction it valued at $575 million.

Court papers filed yesterday claim the Rangers violated a deal – “agreed after a lengthy and fair process last year” - by soliciting and negotiating with other potential buyers.

The group claims it raised its offer by $10 million after it was chosen as the winning bidder because the team was still negotiating with other interested buyers.
