One of the agreements signed by London as a host city is a pledge of no clashes with other major sporting events during the Olympic Games.
“I can confirm that we have been in discussion with all the sports bodies responsible for schedules in the UK in 2012 and we are on track to meet that obligation,” said Deighton. When asked if he was confident the Premier League’s start could be pushed back, he replied: “Yes”.
The London Games will be held between July 27 and August 12. The Community Shield and the start of the Premier League and the Football league seasons usually take place in August.
The Community Shield - the game between the Premier League and the FA Cup winners - is staged at the Wembley Stadium, which will be an Olympic venue.
