Rogers to name Vancouver arena as GM pulls out

Canadian company Rogers Communications has agreed a 10-year naming rights deal with National Hockey League (NHL) team Vancouver Canucks to rename the GM Arena after the car maker decided to switch its sponsorship to in-arena activities.

GM’s 20-year agreement with the Canucks, worth $18.5 million, was supposed to run through 2015, but the company decided to cut it short after filing for bankruptcy last year. Financial terms of the deal with Rogers are undisclosed, but the partnership could involve mobile and radio broadcast rights in the future.

“It's not just the branding aspect, but also extending it into the community, leveraging our technologies,” Rogers president and chief executive officer Nadir Mohamed said. “One of the things we believe in is taking the game to the fans where ever they might be.”

“Rogers understands the sports business,” added Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini. “It's a perfect fit for us. It just wasn't financial. It was everything surrounding it.”

Rogers Communications owns the Major League Baseball team Toronto Blue Jays and the stadium where they play, the Rogers Centre, which was previously the SkyDome.
