Nigerian federation dismisses high command to appease president

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has fired President Sani Lulu and Vice President Amanze Ugbulam in an attempt to reverse a two-year ban from international competitions imposed by the country’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, after the national team’s poor campaign at the World Cup in South Africa.

FIFA, which does not allow government interference on member associations, wrote to the Nigeria president informing it will not recognise the NFF’s dissolution and setting a deadline of today for the ban to be removed. FIFA said if the ban was not lifted, the country will face tougher sanctions including the suspension of local clubs and referees from international competitions, and ending financial assistance.

The NFF said its top officials were sacked “to tender a resolved apology” to all Nigerians and vowed to “to take urgent steps to address the maladministration of football in the country”.

The country’s House of Representatives has also passed a resolution asking Goodluck Jonathan to overturn the ban.

FIFA executive member and former Nigeria minister Dr Amos Adamu will be in the country today for a last mediation attempt.
