Sumo loses third sponsor following gambling scandal

The Japanese wrestling sport of Sumo lost a third tournament sponsor as its governing authority attempts to stem the fallout of a betting scandal. Earlier this month wrestlers admitted to illegal gambling on baseball matches, mahjong and card games.

According to Bloomberg, Foodmaker Natori will not sponsor the Nagoya tournament, scheduled to begin July 11, following similar decisions by Nagatanien - the sport’s biggest sponsor - and Asahi Mutual Life Insurance.

Japan’s sumo association this week suspended chairman Musashigawa and 13 wrestlers after some members admitted to illegal gambling.

“It wasn’t a matter of whether the punishment of the wrestlers was enough or not, it was a matter of the public’s view towards the whole incident,” Natori spokesman Suzuki said.

Under its sponsorship deal, Tokyo-based Natori provides kimonos for tournament staff that feature its logo on the back.
