Johnson and IOC clash over London 2012 timings

The Mayor of London has called for the marathon and triathlon events at the 2012 Olympics to be moved to weekends, from midweek under the current schedule.

Boris Johnson wants to minimise the disruption caused by road and public transport networks being shut for the events, and says the move would help Londoners see more of the Olympics.

“I think what all Londoners want to see is as much of the Olympics taking place in London at a time when they can see them,” he told BBC London.

"If we can have events at the weekends rather than a weekday, when people will be working, so much better.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) says the schedule must also accommodate Olympics fans around the world watching on television.

“We need to have a balanced programme,” IOC coordinator Denis Oswald said. “The Games are for the local people, but also for the world.”
