Ashes will not be forced onto free-to-air

The Ashes cricket match will not be added to the list of events that must be broadcast on free-to-air television in the UK, the sports minister Hugh Robertson has hinted.

A review ordered by the previous UK government had suggested adding the Ashes to the list of “protected” events.

"Public expenditure cuts will impact in sport so the way to equalise it is to give governing bodies freedom to market their own rights," Robertson said, as reported by the BBC.

However Robertson has also said he would like to see sport become less reliant on broadcast money and he would also encourage the ECB to introduce more independent directors to its board.
