Sky Sports News to become pay-channel

UK pay-broadcaster BSkyB yesterday announced plans to make its successful Sky Sports News channel into a pay-channel in a bid to drive subscription revenues. The 24-hour rolling sports news channel will be removed from the UK’s DTT Freeview platform later this year.

The channel was launched on Freeview in 2002 alongside Sky News and Sky Travel. Sky Sports News will be replaced with a one-hour-timeshifted Sky 3 +1 service. Sky 3 replaced Sky Travel in 2005.

As part of the move, BSkyB said it will boost editorial investment in Sky Sports News as it prepares to launch a high-definition service.

“Sky Sports News has been a great success over the last 12 years and we have big ambitions to make it even better,” said Barney Francis, Sky Sports Managing Director. “As part of a subscription service, customers can look forward to expanded coverage and the launch of Europe’s first HD sports news service.”

Under the pay-model, Sky Sports News will only be available to Sky, Virgin Media and Talk Talk TV customers, as well as online and on mobile.
