Union confirms World Cup deal in North Korea

The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union has confirmed a TV deal for 2010 World Cup coverage in seven countries, including North Korea. A Saturday re-run of the opening game between South Africa and Mexico by the North Korean Central Broadcast Service raised suspicions the country would be pirating the signal from South Korea.

A union spokesperson revealed however that footage is being sent free of charge to North Korea following a deal signed just hours before the tournament kicked off, which also included East Timor, Laos, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

In 2002, North Korea showed matches from the World Cup in Japan and South Korea by stealing the signal from broadcasters of its neighbour to the South.

North Korea qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1966.
