World Matchplay Championship will return next year

The Word Matchplay Championship will return to the professional golf calendar next year, taking place in Spain, after being cancelled this year due to a congested schedule.

In 2009 the tournament clashed with the Singapore Open, and lost to the Asian event the participation of players including three-times major champion Ernie Els and Britain's Ian Poulter. Sponsor Volvo and promoter International Management Group decided to postpone the 2010 event after they were unable to find an appropriate replacement date on the European Tour schedule.

The next tournament will take place May 19 to 22 at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain.
