Fox and ESPN retain Serie A rights in the Americas

US commercial broadcaster Fox and Disney-owned pay-television operator ESPN have agreed separate two-year deals in the Americas for the Italian Serie A, according to TV Sports Markets.

Fox, which has held the rights in the US for the past three years, extended the agreement for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons in a deal across all television platforms that also includes Spanish-language rights for the Fox Sports en Español channel. All deals were made with rights-holders the MP & Silva agency.

ESPN acquired the rights in Latin America and the Caribbean for the same two-year period. The broadcaster has held the rights for the same region over the past three years and for the next cycle will sign sublicensing deals with pay-operator DirecTV in selected markets such as Venezuela.

ESPN agreed that MP & Silva could strike free-to-air deals with RedeTV in Brazil, which will show two games per match week, and sport-dedicated broadcaster Meridiano TV in Venezuela.
