Chelsea FC plc revealed last year that the owner’s loans to the club had been converted to shares, making the club debt free.
However, UK newspaper The Guardian revealed the club’s holding company, Fordstam Limited, through which Abramovich’s loans to Chelsea were channelled, still owes to the Russian.
A spokesman for the club confirmed on Tuesday: "Recapitalisation of loans happened at the level of Chelsea FC plc, not the holding company (Fordstam), therefore making the football club debt free."
Abramovich could request the money back if he gives the company a 18 month’s notice.
