Modi lawyer confident on BCCI reply

Mehmood Abdi, lawyer for suspended Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi, said his client’s reply to allegations of wrong-doing should see him reinstated immediately.

Modi’s 15,000-page reply and supporting evidence to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) were wheeled into the BCCI headquarters in six large cardboard boxes on Saturday.

“The documents we have filed today are voluminous but the BCCI president is an eminent lawyer, he is in the habit of reading thousands of pages in minutes, so we hope for an early decision,” Abdi said in an impromptu press conference in Mumbai.

“This is in simple prose and is a direct defence of Mr Modi. I am confident the president would be satisfied 100 per cent, 1,000 per cent and he would be re-instated forthwith. Modi should be reinstated as IPL chairman and BCCI vice-president.”

According to Abdi, BCCI charges against Modi are weak because they are based mostly on oral allegations. Modi was suspended by the BCCI last month over allegations of foul play in the bids for Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab, the broadcasting deal and the reported facilitation fee, rigging of bids for new franchises in 2010 and the sale of internet rights.
