New York Super Bowl bid prepared for snow

The New York Times has published details of New York's bid to stage the Super Bowl in 2014.

he bid document deals with the very real possibility of a snowfall for the February match in the Northerly city, with measures including providing hand warmers to fans and having hundreds of people standing by with shovels to move snow.

The NYT said the document goes into “eye-blurring” detail, including the width and material of the stadium seating, the availability of 1,000 taxis – and two helipads, advice that local golf courses are recommended will be closed in February but visitors for the event can go bowling, police escorts for taking the teams to practice, the news media to interview sessions and the officials to the game, and a venue to rehearse the half-time show.

The New York bid is favourite to win the hosting rights when NFL owners award them on May 24. The other two bids are Tampa and South Florida, two traditional hosts in the sunny south of the US.

The Super Bowl in New York would be seen by owners as a reward for local NFL teams the Giants and the Jets building their new billion-dollar-plus Meadowlands Stadium. The Super Bowl has been awarded to cities in the past as a carrot for developing new stadiums.
