AEG interested in Olympic Stadium

American sports and entertainment company AEG has emerged as a contender to take over the £547 million London Olympic Stadium after the Summer Games in 2012.

According to BBC Sport, AEG, which has turned London’s failing Millennium Dome into the successful O2 sport and concert venue, is one of 106 parties to have expressed an interest in assuming control of the 80,000-seater stadium in Stratford.

Potential bidders have until May 17 to register their interest. A shortlist of about 30 is expected to be drawn up, with a final decision taken in July this year.

The BBC reports that AEG's declaration of interest came last week following encouragement from Baroness Margaret Ford, the chair of the Olympic Park Legacy Company who also worked closely on the sale of the Millennium Dome to AEG while working as a government adviser.

Premier League club West Ham declared interest in converting the Olympic stadium into a football arena two months ago. Essex County Cricket Club has also expressed an interest in playing Twenty20 games at the arena, and the National Football League said it would be willing to look at the potential for playing American Football games there.

In is unclear as yet how AEG, which also owns the Staples Center in Los Angeles, plans to use the venue.
