Melbourne rugby chief resigns over salary cap scandal

Chief executive of new Super rugby franchise Melbourne Rebels Brian Waldron has resigned after being accused of salary cap breaches that brought National Rugby League club Melbourne Storm to its knees.

According to Reuters, Waldron has been labelled by his former employers as the "architect" of illegal player payments that helped the Storm win two premiership titles in the last three years. The Storm yesterday had their 2007 and 2009 titles revoked.

The team was also fined A$1.7 million ($1.58 million) and will not be allowed to accrue any points in the 2010 season. The scandal and severity of the punishment have been labelled the biggest crisis to ever hit NRL.

"I don't know whether he is the absolute centre of (the scandal), that'll be for others to judge," Rebels chairman Mitchell told reporters today. "I just didn't want this to be a distraction in any way to what we're doing. Quite frankly I've told him to make himself scarce for a while."

Waldron was employed as the CEO of Storm from 2004-2009.
