Scottish FA chief executive resigns

Gordon Smith stood down as chief executive of the Scottish Football Association last night citing “personal reasons”.

His resignation precedes the publication of a report on the state of Scottish football that is understood to condemn the way the game has been run in the country.

Smith – whose father is unwell and mother recently had an accident - had also been the target of criticism from clubs and the Scottish Premier League over his interventions in a series of disciplinary matters.

In a separate report, Clydesdale Bank announced the extension of its title sponsorship deal with the Scottish Premier League until the end of the 2012-13 season.
