Bomb blasts cause IPL semi-final move

Fresh Indian security fears have caused the semi-finals of the 2010 Indian Premier League to be moved to the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai following two low-intensity blasts at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Saturday evening.

The blasts occurred shortly before the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians was due to begin at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Two unexploded devices were also found in the subsequent 24 hours.

"We don't want to take any chances. We want to ensure the safety of our players and spectators alike," said IPL commissioner Lalit Modi said from Dubai, where he is attending an International Cricket Council meeting.

"While reluctant to relocate the semi finals at such short notice, yesterday's incidents have made it clear that the current environment in Bangalore prevents us from continuing with our original plans," added Modi in an official IPL statement. "The incidents were assessed by local police and the IPL's security agency as being of a minor nature but they have forced our hand."

Last year’s edition of the tournament was moved to South Africa in amid fears the security forces would be too stretched by a clash of dates with Indian federal elections.

Indian police officials said they are confident that they can assure the safety of players and visitors ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi this October, citing the hockey World Cup last month as evidence that an Indian mega-event can take place incident-free.
