Lawyer defeats McNamee in Tennis Australia election

Sydney lawyer Stephen Healy has been named president of Tennis Australia for the next three years, beating former world number one doubles player Paul McNamee.

Healy, president of Tennis New South Wales since 2007, defeated McNamee in a ballot in Melbourne today. Healy will replace Geoff Pollard - president of Tennis Australia since 1989 - in October.

“I congratulate Stephen Healy and am heartened to hear him say there's a role for the disaffected members of the tennis community,” McNamee said in a statement. “I intend to continue my involvement in the sport, particularly in the Hopman Cup, and in addition intend to take up an opportunity in the critical implementation of world class clay courts in Australia.”

Pollard also congratulated Healy, adding that he “understands tennis from grassroots right through to the elite level.”
