UK Govt plans to “give football clubs back to fans”

The UK government plans to give football fans the first option to buy their clubs when they are put up for sale and to require a 25-per-cent stake in each club to be handed over to supporters clubs.

UK newspaper The Guardian reports that the ruling Labour government will promise to take action on the plan if it is elected to power again in a general election expected in the next few months.

Other proposals include a deadline for reform of the Football Association including the removal of "vested interests" from the FA board, introducing a unified system of governance for issues from club ownership to youth development, and allowing professional leagues and the FA additional oversight of club takeovers.

The Guardian says that the plans are likely to put Prime Minister Gordon Brown “on a collision course” with the Premier League, which has vigoroulsy defended its independence in recent years.
