Modi predicts exponential revenues for IPL

Lalit Modi, commissioner of the Indian Premier League, has estimated an almost one hundred per centyear-on-year increase in revenue for the Twenty20 tournament.

Modi told the Times of India that revenue from each IPL match was approximately $1 million in the first season, $2 million in the second season and $3 million in the third.

He added figures should grow exponentially in the coming years with each match worth $5.5 million next season and up to $15 million and $20 million respectively in seasons six and seven.

“IPL is the biggest Indian global brand, which is worth $4.5 billion,” he said.

Franchisees receive 72 per cent of match revenue, with a further eight per cent distributed according to the team’s ranking in the league.

Based on this season’s $3 million match revenue, franchisees would be taking $2.4 million per match, with $600,000 going to the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
