Hammers accept track at London Olympic stadium

English Premier League club West Ham has confirmed it will bid for London’s 2012 Olympic stadium on the day the Olympic Park Legacy Company launched a call for expressions of interest in the venue.

The East London club - which lost 3-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers last night leaving them three points from the relegation zone - had previously criticised the organiser’s commitment to keep the athletics track after the Games, but now appears to have backtracked.

“We acknowledge the need for the stadium to host world-class athletics and so it should,” West Ham vice chairman Karen Brady said. “But it can accommodate football too - and a whole lot more. There has to be a way of achieving that.”

West Ham partnered with the Newham Council to outline a plan that would change the original plan of having the venue downsized from 80,000 to 25,000 seats. An Olympic visitor centre and a football museum will also be proposed.
