Muslim lobbyists call on IOC to move Sochi Olympics

The Circassian diaspora, the group of indigenous Muslims from the northwest Caucasus, has appealed to the International Olympic Committee for the 2014 Winter Olympics not to be held in Sochi unless Russia apologises for the deaths of 300,000 Circassians in and around Sochi during the 19th century.

Reuters reports that No Sochi 2014, a lobbying group comprised of 30 Circassian organisations which held protests at last month's Vancouver Games, has yet to receive an answer from the IOC.

The Circassians argue the Sochi Games are equally as insensitive as hosting a sporting competition on the grounds of Nazi death camp Auschwitz. The Circassian deaths were recorded by Russian imperial historians in 1864 but have never been recognised as genocide by any nation.

"The Games are part of Russia's policy of eradicating Circassian history," said Lisa Jarkasi, the US-born co-founder of No Sochi 2014. "They are constructing on a mass grave. We need to put a stop to this."

The Circassian diaspora joins a list of opponents to the Games which also includes Greenpeace and humanitarian group Amnesty International.
