MLS avoids strike with new labour deal

US Major League Soccer has prevented a first-ever strike by reaching a new five-year collective bargaining agreement only a few days before the start of the season on March 25.

The majority of the players will receive guarantee contracts and have increased rights when their deals expire, although they will not have the free agency they claimed would give them more ability to move between clubs.

“We also collectively agreed that we need to grow our television ratings and attendance,” MLS commissioner Don Garber said.

“Perhaps five years from now we have a league that's operating with all teams at a profit.”

The MLS will continue to negotiate all contracts on behalf of the teams, but said players have always had the rights-alternative to sign with a club overseas.
