Three Winter Olympics 2018 candidate cities submit applications

Annecy in France, Munich, and PyeongChang in South Korea officially applied to become candidates to host the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in 2018 by submitting responses to an International Olympic Committee questionnaire by a March 15 deadline.

The responses give an overview of the Applicant cities' projects and the IOC will use it to decide whether to accept them as “candidate cities”, a decision which will be made this June. Candidate cities will then have until January 2011 to submit a more detailed “candidature file”, before IOC Evaluation Commission visits take place between then and July 2011, when the final decision on the host will be made.

The French team which handed over Annecy's application included Aimé Jacquet, World Cup-winning former French national football team coach. The Annecy team in a press release said it would soon be launching the “2018 Business Club” an initiative aimed at bringing on board French companies and economic support.

In a clear statement that it has focused its technical planning on delivering the ultimate athlete experience in 2018, Munich presented its Two-Park, Two-Village concept for the Games in its Applicant File and set out its vision of “The Friendly Games.” With an Ice Park in Munich and a Snow Park in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Munich has concentrated 91 per cent of all events within the two Park-like environments.

PyeongChang’s vision, set out in its Applicant File, is to "help expand winter sports internationally, and connect the Olympic Movement with millions of new, young hearts and minds across the Asian region.”
