According to an official statement, over the past three months a long-term proposal for the league’s re-launch was developed, in collaboration with the Infront agency. The proposal was for an eight-team competition for the next three seasons with teams from Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland.
"We deeply regret that we had to take the decision to discontinue our efforts for a CHL re-launch due to a lack of a clear long-term commitment from the leagues and clubs, which has always been a precondition for the success of this league," said IIHF President René Fasel. "It is impossible to build an international league in an economically sustainable way without stable backing."
The CHL was first launched in 2008-09, with €10 million in prize money, but was shelved after Russian energy supplier Gazprom dropped out as the main sponsor during the global financial downturn.
