Supermarket sweep for England 2018

Morrisons has become an official partner of England’s bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The British supermarket is the third sponsor of the bid after telecommunications brand BT and tax and advisory services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The partnership is worth a reported £1 million and will run throughout the remainder of the bid process.

“We’re sure that our customers would be delighted if the World Cup came to England in 2018 and by becoming a commercial partner we can help them to play their part in supporting the bid,” said Mark Gunter, Group Retail Director at Morrisons.

Andy Anson, England 2018 bid Chief Executive, added: “Domestic support can play a vital role in helping to convince FIFA we would be worthy hosts of the 2018 World Cup…I am confident that our partnership with Morrisons, a truly nationwide company, will help us do this by gathering further support from millions of people right across the country.”

England is one of eight competitors bidding to host the 2018 tournament and one of 10 bidding to host the 2022 tournament. A decision for both will be announced by FIFA in December 2010.
