USOC against bid for 2020 Summer Olympics

The United States does not plan to bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics after Chicago was passed over for the 2016 Games in October last year.

“At this time there’s certainly no plans for 2020. Right now our focus is on other things, not just bidding,” US Olympic Committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky said on Saturday in Vancouver.

“We don’t have to look much farther than what happened in the last two bid races. We have to focus our attention elsewhere. It may mean developing stronger relationships with the IOC or having time to do other things.”

Chicago, which spent about $80 million in its bid, was the first city eliminated in the 2016 voting by the International Olympic Committee despite being touted by many as the front-runner. USOC is believed to have angered the IOC with plans to start its own television network.

USOC CEO Scott Blackmun told the Washington Post on Saturday the IOC sent “a message, loud and clear” that it does not want the Olympics in the United States.
